Nonverbal Communication(#3)

Many of us take nonverbal communication for granted or read messsages out of awareness when it comes to using nonverbal to listen to messages. Watch a TV talk show (Oprah, etc.) Look for three different adaptors as the host are using them in their conversations. Which adaptors are frequently being used? Do they actually fit into a category? Are they important in relaying nonverbal communication to the audience or receiver of the message(s)? Please comment to this post after reading chapter five on nonveral communication. Be sure to identify the show title, time and date of the airing of the show.

Show: Late Night with Conan O'Brien
Air Date:10/31/08 12:35PM on NBC
Host of a show titled after himself, Late night with Conan O'Brien, uses nonverbal communication quite often when telling a joke or explaining a situation. During his monologue, he constantly moves toward the camera and away from it. He is very animated and moves around a lot during his monologue. He uses his trade mark string dance when first coming into view, which comprises of pulling imaginary strings to move his hips, to build up the energy of the audience because it is quite historical to watch. He also raises eyebrows while delivering joke, anticipating a reaction from the studio audience. He pauses for the reaction. If the audience laughs and supports his statement or joke he goes with it and grins and does a bit of a dance. However, in the event a joke isn't as funny as originally conceived in rehearsal and or gets little response from audience, he tries to recover, rubbing his hands together in contemplation to come up with a way to rebound from the failed joke by blaming a producer or writer. Many times he refers to his own hairstyle when talking to a guest. He constantly reinforces his opinion of his wacky hair-do by running his hand through it and it always falls back to it's proper, usual style. Another adapter he uses after or during a joke he cackles, which seems to be uncontrollably to enhance the effect of a joke that wasn't as funny as planned, which brings back support from the audience to applaud and laugh themselves.

Show: The Ellen DeGeneres Show
Air Date: 10/31/08 3:00p.m. on NBC
Ellen DeGeneres uses nonverbal communication many times throughout the show. On this particular show it was a Halloween special featuring Wanda Sykes, a comedian. When Ellen came out on the show she wasn’t just sitting there she used non-verbal communication by jumping out on the audience from behind a couch intending to grab the audience’s attention. Another adaptor was what she wore, the Halloween costumes she wore adapted with the audience. When talking she walks up to the audience. Another adaptor was how she decorated the stage, with Halloween decorations; she wanted the audience to know before hand what the show will be about. She is always smiling and laughing. When she makes a joke she frequently increases the volume in her voice. When she makes a joke she makes a serious looks at the audience, to see if the audience realizes that she’s being sarcastic. Ellen is a very jumpy person that moves around through most of the show which is important so the audience does not feel sleepy or wanting to leave. All the adaptors fit through her show, because she always receives an amused reaction by the audience.

Show: The Colbert Report
Station: Comedy Central
Date: 23 Oct. 2008
Time: 11:30 p.m.

Stephen Colbert, host of "The Colbert Report" uses many adapters throughout his shows. Usually at the start and returning from commercial breaks he adjusts his clothes, either buttoning or unbuttoning his suit jacket. Another is he pragmatically collates his script into a neat pile and furthermore, he lines up the corner edges when the pages are laid flat on his desk. A third adapter is the touching of his glasses. Sometimes he does this to secure them better, but most often he does this as a reassurance and barely moves them at all. Mr. Colbert's adapters are used in the interim between laughs or as a segue into a new topic. His conscious or unconscious adjustments can be cited as territoriality, which is a category of proxemics – the study of space and distance.

Show: Sunday NFL Countdown
Air Time: Sundays: 11 A.M.-1 P.M.

Sunday NFL Countdown is a pre-game show, for the National Football League that airs every Sunday during the season. On countdown, Chris Berman hosts the show and has many different co-anchors who sit along with him and discuss the games of the day, highlights from the last week, interviews with players, features on different players, coaches, and sports personalities. On the show, when all the anchors are discussing a topic, sometimes they’ll laugh and joke around and they’re facial expressions and demeanors are different from when they are discussing a more serious topic. Looking at “Boomer” and the others they smile, laugh, and just horse around with each other when they are having fun. When a serious topic, like an injury or a someone getting hurt, comes up you can see a more sadden look on their faces and they bow their heads and are silent for the player or coach. Every reporter and anchor on the show is always dressed in suits and ties. Appearance is everything some people say and everyone looks more appealing and looks like a better source of information. Sometimes you forget that most of these guys use to just dress in a sports jersey and sweatpants and hit guys for a living. On countdown, sometimes when the analysts are discussing a team’s success or a weakness, they reenact a teams play or formation they use. This reenactment helps bring alive and makes viewers more familiar with the situation.

Show: Oprah
Air Date: 10/29/08 4:00 p.m. on ABC

Oprah used many different nonverbal communications in her show last Wednesday. The show was about children who make a difference in people lives. She used different facial expressions when she was talking about the children, such as when she talked about this you tube video that two parents made for their son who only lived for 90 days but touched many lives, she showed her emotion when she was crying. Oprah would also joke around with other children on the show and her laughter and smiles are a sign of nonverbal communication. Oprah also always uses attention getters which express the way she feels without her actually saying it.

Show: 106th and Park
Air Date: 10/31/08
Time: 6:00PM BET

106th and Park is a TV show on BET similar to TRL on MTV. Many people have watched it before. This show mainly shows music videos. Rosci and Terrance are the hosts. It is interesting to see a female and male as hosts because many times they won't agree on things, yet alot of the times they do. When Rosci hears Terrance say something she doesn't like, she'll look at him and make a face as in (are you crazy?!) The audience laughs because they understand why she did that face, showing nonverbal communication. They also try to grab the audience's attention by dancing to the videos or moving around the set. This shows the audience members and viewers that the hosts are having a good time, it makes us wonder and want more.

Show: Caso Cerrado
Air Date: Mon-Fri. 4:00pm on Univision
Dr. Ana Maria Polo uses nonverbal communication everyday during her show. As she listens to both the plaintiff and the defendant, her facial expressions often let viewers know who she believes and who she knows is lying. Another adaptor she uses is the way she speaks to people depending on their age. During the most recent show I watched, she brought in the children that were involved in the particular case she was dealing with. When she spoke to them, she came down from behind her desk to sit next to them and spoke to them in calm, soothing tones. It's interesting to see how just watching her mannerisms and facial expressions give a clue as to what her verdict will be.

Show: Oprah
Air Date: 10/30/08 4PM

This particular show was about the show "The Biggest Loser" and their weight loss secrets. Oprah uses non-verbal communication by her facial expressions and how obviously impressed she was with these people losing enormous amounts of weight. She was also making gestures that she was sympathetic to weight-loss and how difficult it can be. She also has the contestants make a large entrance which is their own non-verbal communication as to the struggles they have been through. Oprah nods her head a lot and really concentrates on what people are saying while they speak which shows us that she appreciates what they're saying so we should too.

The way his eyes lite up when he saw the brothers hugging after so long, you can tell by his eyes that he too is happy. Another adaptor he used was body movement. After they all sat down to talk, Don Fransisco sat at an angel while close to the brothers while still being visible to the crowd and cameras, so everyone could rejoice with these men. A third adaptor he uses is when he's moving onto the next segment of his show, he touched one of the guys on the back and everyone applauded. That's as if he was saying 'Congrats'and that he was satisfied with himself with bringing this family back together, and the crowd applauded for such a great acomplishment.

Show: Believer's Voice of Victory
11/02 at 6:30 a.m.
This show is a religious show where two ladies sit at a table and discuss scriptures from the bible. These two ladies use very simple adaptors throughout their show which is quite simple because of their setting. The one host Laura sits with her legs crossed and her hands clasped together on her lap. She constantly unattaches one hand when she is speaking and places it on on her armchair. In addition, she uses regulators such as head nods, eye contact, and constant shifts in posture. Secondly, the other lady Billye Brim also uses speculators as well as illustrators with her hands when she speaks. Lastly, she clasps her hands together and leaves them in the middle of her chest as she speaks. These adaptors, regulators, and illustrators help the hosts speak and therefore makes it better for the audience to understand what they are trying to say because it is more comfortable for them.

Tyra Banks Show
10/13/2008 My9
This episode of the Tyra Banks Show included a special guest, Paris Hilton. Tyra used non-verbal communication by smiling alot to Paris to give her a warm feeling instead of a questionnare session. Also the funiture and the way she was positioned toward Paris were two main non-verbal communication tools. She was sitting facing her with her legs crossed which almost meant, "Im intersted in what you are saying, continue". This was also important, because it made the conversation a one on one instead of Paris against Tyra and the audience, she semmed more comfortable. The funiture were love seats instead of chairs which gave the set a home feeling. The one that was frequently used alot was Tyra's smile. It was important to the audience because it aloowed Paris to open up more and say what the audience wanted to hear.

The Tyra Banks Show
Aired: 10-02-2008
Topic: Open Marriages

The host of the show is Tyra Banks, she is a Model and much more. She nods her head when she first reads the topic of the day and when she comes out, she has this huge wonderful smile on her face which is welcoming to the audience. Then when the show starts and the guest speakers are talking her eyes widen because she hears what they say and in this episode they talked about how couples like to sleep with other people and have an open marriage so her whole facial expression changed after hearing that, she went wow. Also she uses her hands a lot; she has index cards in her hands but she's always waving them around. The influence of the hand directs the audience to turn where she's pointing plus it makes her verbal talking more effective. Also when Tyra talks she has attitude on her face like her eyes roll every now and then.
